Catfish

The term ‘Catfish’ is becoming more and more well known across the web all across the world. Up until a few years ago, people would have assumed the word Catfish was the actual fish, however, Catfish is one of the most popular terms used across the social media networks.

A Catfish is someone who creates an online fake profile in order to draw someone into an online relationship. This person takes another persons details and photographs and uses them as their own. The images used are usually that of another who tends to either be a model or a very attractive person in order to lure people into an online ‘fake’ relationship.

The rise in people ‘cat fishing’ other people has risen significantly over the past couple of years, especially since the use of social media is rising increasingly. The fact that someone can easily take your profile picture and details off the internet within a matter of minutes, and create a fake profile based on your information, is quite frightening. We believe that stronger systems should be in place in order to stop other people from taking your information online and using it as their own.

Facebook – Lost & Found

Many people see Facebook as the biggest social media networking site. People from all over the world use it to connect with their friends, check up on the latest trends and some simply use it to play games. However, more recently Facebook is being used to help connect lost relatives and friends from all over the world.

According to recent reports, Facebook is the first tool people use to try and find their lost relatives. Thanks to Facebook’s search tool, you can look up any person in any country to see if they match any details given. Although this may seem a little bit creepy, it’s important to remember that privacy is becoming a number one priority on Facebook, and each user can choose exactly who can see what on their profile.

Although there is much debate as to how much privacy Facebook offers, the fact that people can reunite over a system that’s free to use is extremely innovational.

Facebook Experiment

Facebook is under fire for recently conducting an experiment on its users without their knowledge. According to recent reports, Facebook carried out the psychology experiment on over 700,000 users without their knowledge or permission.

The experiment took place in 2012 for one week, and involved adjusting the way users see their newsfeed, and whether the adjustments made significantly changed their emotions. The experiment was conducted in collaboration with two large US universities to find out whether “exposure to emotions led people to change their own posting behaviours”. The experiment has recently sparked major backlash across the web due to the fact that Facebook conducted such an experiment that affected users emotionally and mentally without their knowledge.

Quickly after the experiment was made public, Facebook issued an apology to its users and anyone who may have been affected.

New Facebook Business Page

Facebook have developed a new page design for business accounts. The new design includes changes to the news feed, timeline and notifications panel. Unlike other social networking accounts, Facebook have slowly implemented the change on Facebook and have given the users the option to make the switch between the two, with plenty of notification of when the change is happening.

The new Facebook timeline has been designed to make posts look more consistent on the news feed, and is now all included in one panel on the right hand side, instead of two panels taking up most of the page. The left hand side of the page now showcases locations, photos and applications, basically everything that with situated at the top of the page below the Facebook timeline.

We have pretty neutral feelings about the new change on Facebook, but we can’t help but think that if something works well as it is, why change it? The only drawback is how the new timeline photo appears on the page. Your company name and type of business is situated on top of the timeline image, meaning companies have less creative rights to showcase their core values in their timeline image.

We’re sure everyone will get used to this new change, we just hope that it doesn’t change again in the near future- not everyone is comfortable with change, even if it works well, especially in social networking.

Do you get your news from Facebook?

Facebook news

For many people, their first port of call on the internet is Facebook, so it would follow that the social network might become an ‘incidental’ source for news. As friends and contacts share and post information, opinions and links to news stories, you may find you start to build up a picture of the day’s events before you even buy a physical paper or click through to a news website. A survey by the Pew Research Centre in the US found that 78% of respondents said they received news information from Facebook ‘without actually looking for it’.

One respondent explained: “If it wasn’t for Facebook news, I’d probably never really know what’s going on in the world because I don’t have time to keep up with the news on a bunch of different locations.” Does this sound familiar? The researchers said the results provide evidence that the social platform exposes some users to news and information that they might not have seen otherwise. “It may be the very incidental nature of the site that ultimately exposes more people to news there,” the Pew Centre said.

On the surface, the survey seems like a pretty positive development in the social world – providing a wider source of information for users, especially content that they might not have otherwise looked for themselves. With this rise in exposure, does it mean we, as social users, are becoming better informed and educated? The idea is pretty subjective, of course, and depends on the type of news stories that are circulated. The likelihood is that the links that are most widely shared are those that provoke conflicting responses, or are concerned with an inflammatory subject – great for a debate but not necessarily always the most measured and unbiased views. Think about the type of news stories you’ve seen in your timeline recently – have you been inspired to weigh in with an opinion, or share a link, or sign a petition? Is receiving your news from social media broadening our outlooks or narrowing it even further with the biases of our friends and family? Or are we completely overthinking it? Tell us what you think!

Pew said that ‘it may be the very incidental nature of the site that ultimately exposes more people to news there’.

It also found that fully 59 percent of all adult Facebook users and 53 percent of Facebook news consumers mostly access the site through a desktop or laptop computer rather than a mobile device such as a smartphone or tablet.
