How does content affect SEO?

SEO copywriting

SEO copywriting

Providing your website pages with relevant, informative content gives your website a greater likelihood of being ranked higher within search engines.

When writing content for your site you need to keep in mind the keywords and phrases that you are using in your SEO campaign, as well as ensuring that you are creating fresh and engaging text rather than re-hashing or duplicating existing content.

All content within your site is crawled by search engines, and allows them to discover what the subject of each page is. By adding additional content, you can add weight to your website and increase its authority and respect from the point of view of search engines, which will in turn increase your ranking.

Content can be added in a variety of ways, for example: a regularly updated blog; extra pages to draw attention to new aspects of your business or promotions; or enabling user comments and reviews.

A few considerations to take into account when writing content for your site are:

  • Plan what you are going to write. For example, schedule blog posts so you are adding fresh content each day/week.
  • Ensure your content is actually interesting! An obvious point, perhaps, but many companies misguidedly think it is enough to simply roll out recycled sales pitches rather than providing content of value.
  • What do your customers want to know? Research your audience and try to provide them with what they want.
  • Provide clear information and stick to the point. Make it easy for customers to use and navigate your site, and gain the information they’re looking for.
  • Think about layout – text too far below the fold might be missed by customers browsing a page, and excessive text without images can be overwhelming.
  • Proofread your text! Typos, mistakes and incorrect information make both your site and company look unprofessional, amateur and untrustworthy.

Our copywriters can help with content for your website, helping to provide useful, effective content to assist with SEO and the general success of your site.

How does a search engine work?

Search engines store information about web pages which they then index and provide as results to search queries, ranked according to relevance. Search engines ‘crawl’ these pages using automated browsers often called ‘spiders’, looking for attributes that will help gauge how well it matches a search for particular words and phrases relating to that page.

The vast database built up by a search engine means that it is able to retrieve specific and varied information extremely quickly when given a search to run, with the aim of providing the most appropriate and closely matching result as possible. This result is shown in a list of links, known as a SERP (search engine result page). The higher a website appears on this list, the more likely it is to be visited by users. Companies implement search engine optimisation (SEO) to help their websites rank higher in result pages, by ensuring that their content and website meet the criteria search engines look for.

Each page is studied and analysed by spiders to determine how it should be indexed – looking at titles, headings, meta tags and content itself to extract keywords and phrases. When a user searches for one of these words or phrases, the search engine chooses the sites that best match the query, depending on relevancy, popularity and authority.

The way search engines decide on the most useful match varies widely between engines, according to the algorithms they employ, and understanding the complexity of these processes can be extremely difficult. Each search engine also sets their own procedure which must be adhered to when conducting an online marketing campaign, or you run the risk of being penalised by the search engine and waste all your hard work.

Algorithms are created to allow equal opportunity for each company to rank highly, which is why SEO is a great long-term alternative to paid search (PPC) where budgets can dictate success.

Understanding how search engines work, and the processes they use to rank websites is extremely complicated. Therefore we spend a lot of time researching and testing to gauge the effects of different techniques on a website’s ranking. We have vast experience in optimising for natural search and can help to ensure your website ranks well for its relevant keywords.

Tweetdeck Acquired by Twitter

Tweetdeck has officially been purchased by Twitter – enabling the micro-blogging company to offer its own account management platform to users, something up to now that has only been offered by third party companies.

Tweedeck was created in 2008 and allows users to post on multiple Twitter accounts, as well as managing other social networks such as Facebook, LinkedIn and Foursquare. Approximately 5.5% of all tweets are posted by Tweetdeck users and ballpark figures for the acquisition report the sale to have cost around £25m.

Twitter’s chief executive, Dick Costolo explained: “This acquisition is an important step forward for us. Tweetdeck provides brands, publishers, marketers and others with a powerful platform to track all the real-time conversations they care about.”

The acquisition comes after a recent clampdown by Twitter on third party developers creating Twitter clients, which angered many developers and highlighted the fact that Twitter did not offer anything similar under their own masthead. The assumption has to be that Twitter now decided there was no point developing a platform to compete with such a successful client as Tweetdeck and purchase was a more effective tactic.

You can read the full story at the BBC and read the perspectives of both companies in this blog post by Twitter and this post by Tweetdeck.

How Important Are Links to SEO?

SEO UK

SEO UK

For any website and online business, links are hugely significant in lending weight and authority to a site, which produces higher ranking results within search engines. Many businesses fail online due to either a general inexperience of the web or lack of marketing. Search engine optimisation (SEO) is an integral part of online business and will benefit the smallest local company to the largest corporation. Link building is an important part of SEO.

Beware, however – there are many SEO and link-building packages being peddled online promising instant and massive results. These kind of scams will not assist your internet marketing and may leave your site at risk of being penalised by search engines for using unethical techniques. Creating a well designed website and integrating an effective SEO plan are the first and most important steps to achieving a successful online business.

Why do I need links?

Each link you acquire points traffic to your site, which should mean you get more visitors. Links can be viewed like a sort of points system, with some having greater value than others. Search engines value links in several ways, for example the relevancy of the page the link appears on in relation to the page it is linking to. A completely unrelated site linking to one of your landing pages is not going to be worth as much as a link from a site on a similar subject. Links from popular and established websites are worth more than others because of their authority within search engines. Remember that it’s not just a numbers game – one powerful link can be the equivalent to 1000 other minor links.

So – how do I get links for my site?

There are many ways of obtaining links, but a few simple starting points include:

  • Blog posts – Providing content that will encourage others to provide a link to it from their website and share the information with their readers/followers.
  • Articles – Writing informative and engaging articles which will then be shared and distributed by others, each time providing new links to your website.
  • Directory submissions – Increase the number of ways customers can find you by listing your website in relevant directories.
  • Link exchange with other websites – Offer reciprocal linking with relevant affiliates.
  • Search engine submissions – Submit your website directly to search engines to ensure they are aware of your site and receive the most updated version of your content.

We have many years of experience in SEO and link building, and can help set up an internet marketing campaign for your company to deliver great results and get the best out of your website.
